Research Compliance

ISU is required to comply with all state and federal regulations that govern research activities and the everyday responsibilities of educational institutions. The university is governed by

 2 CFR 200, Uniform Guidance

PDF Summary of institutional compliance requirements »

Within IRBNet there is a library for each compliance committee - IRB, IACUC, and Biosafety, -  that contains forms, instructions and documents specific to each compliance area.

Human Subjects

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a campus committee empowered by federal regulations to oversee research activities involving human subjects. The IRB is responsible for the review and monitoring of research involving human subjects in order to assure the protection of the rights and welfare of the subjects participating in research.

The IRB is dedicated to facilitating the ethical conduct of research. Please visit the university's IRB website for institutional guidance related to research and human subjects.

Use of Vertebrate Animals in Research or Teaching

The Animal Welfare Act Regulations (AWAR) and the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care & Use of Laboratory Animals (PHS Policy) require all faculty, staff and students using vertebrate animals in research and/or teaching to secure Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval. In addition, all personnel involved in vertebrate animal care and use must complete IACUC training prior to initiating any work with these animals. Please note that it is the Principal Investigator's responsibility to ensure that students and staff under his/her direction complete the required training.

Failure to obtain approval and/or to complete training will result in the deactivation of all associated grant/contract accounts until all approvals have been secured and personnel training completed.

IACUC protocol applications must be submitted via IRBNet. For assistance using IRBNet, call the Office of Sponsored Programs at (812) 237-3088.
