What is a listserv?
A listserv is an electronic bulletin board for posting messages and sharing information. Practically speaking, these are e-mail-based communities for people who share similar interests. In this case, a shared interest in student transition-related issues. When e-mail is addressed to a LISTSERV, it is automatically broadcast to everyone on the list, giving you a way to have open discussions with dozens or even hundreds of people through e-mail.


LISTSERV Frequently Asked Questions

    Note: Mailing lists are available to Faculty and Administrative staff only. A valid ISU email address is required. This list will be hosted on

    List Name: 

    This should be a meaningful but short (maximum 15 characters) name that is identifiable with the purpose of your discussion list. It will be the name part of the address to which postings are addressed. (ex: ISU-Windows-L) The "-L" will be added if you do not include it. All lists must end in "-L".

    To send mail to this list, use the List Name (with the -L) followed by (ex:

    List Title:  

    This should be a few words which describe the purpose of the list. It will appear in the heading of the postings distributed by the list. (ex: ISU Windows Discussion List)

    Owners ISU Email Address (do not use an alias ... normally  

    This address will be used as the owners e-mail address. This user id will be able to issue list management commands such as ADD and REMOVE to add and remove subscriptions. Also, errors in delivery to list members will be forwarded to this address. Additional owners can be added after the list has been created.

    Can Members Subscribe Themselves?        Yes         No

    Some lists memberships are more appropriately cleared by the list manager. If you choose No to this option, anyone attempting to subscribe to this list by sending the typical SUBSCRIBE command to the listserv will get a message referring the user to the list moderator.

    Postings By Members Only?        Yes          No
    Postings addressed from a non-subscriber will be rejected if Yes is chosen for this option. This option is almost always Yes.

    Once you receive notification at the email address supplied above, if you are a new owner go to and click on "Get Password". You will then be able to "login" at and manage the list using this web site.
