Cisco Clean Access - How Can I Prepare My Computer?

There are currently two standard security protections required for access to the Indiana State University campus network. If you have the following items covered on your computer before the implementation, the Cisco Clean Access process will be much quicker.

1. Your computer has the latest Windows updates.

The Microsoft Web site at provides updates for Windows operating system software and Windows-based hardware. Updates are small pieces of additional software that address known issues and help protect against known security threats.

Windows Auto-update should also be enabled to download updates as they are released. If you turn on Automatic Updates, Windows Update can automatically deliver high priority updates to your computer as they become available. If you have questions on how to set this up, please call the Technology Assistance Group at 2910.

2. Your computer has anti-virus software installed with the most recent updates.

Indiana State University uses Microsoft Security Essentials and provides this software to students. You can download the software at

NOTE: If you choose to install the free Microsoft Security Essencials protection, you should uninstall any other virus protection software on your computer. If you do not do this, there could be a conflict when installing MSE.

ISU is allowing those students who have already installed Trend Micro, Symantec, and others to continue using it. A qualifying and up-to-date anti-virus installation is required to log on to the campus network.

To check if you have up-to-date software: Open your anti-virus program from the Start menu or the taskbar notification area, and look for update status. If you still aren't sure if your anti-virus software is up-to-date, contact your anti-virus software provider.
