Password Management Software Standards

Standard for
Password Management Software

IT Standard Issue Date: November 7, 2013

Supersedes: New

Who is Affected by this Standard: Faculty and staff

Why We Have this Standard:

The purpose of this document is to set a standard recommendation for secure password management software. Most users have many different accounts and passwords for applications and services. With increases in password strength and password expiration policies it is important to have a secure way to organize and remember passwords. To help solve this issue the Office of Information Technology is recommending password managed software called KeePass. KeePass is a free open source password manager, which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key file. So you only have to remember one single master password or select the key file to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known.

Summary of Standard:

All users of Indiana State University IT Resources are responsible for taking appropriate steps, to select and secure their user credentials. University faculty and staff should be instructed to use KeePass password management software for secure storage of user credentials.

Responsibilities:

  2. Provide support for password management software.

Chairs, Unit Heads, Deans, AVP’s , VP’s :

Standards:
