Standard for Office Structured Cabling
(Data Network and Telephone Connections)

IT Standard Issue Date:  1 January 2017

Supersedes: New

Who is Affected by this Standard: Faculty and staff

Why We Have this Standard: This standard is in place to manage the work and cost associated with cabling and/or activating multiple network connections in a standard office space.  The most important principles underlying this standard are:

    1. Recognition that most standard faculty and staff office spaces can be served with a single location containing two connections for network or voice-over-IP (telephone) connections.

    2. Reduction of cost associated with renovating and constructing new facilities

    3. Reduction of staff time and cost associated with adding new connections to standard offices when a single connection will work satisfactorily for a standard office configuration

    4. Recognition that special-purpose facilities such as computer labs and specialized work spaces may need additional connections beyond this standard

What are the responsibilities associated with this standard?

    • OIT: consult with parties involved in renovations and new construction to determine the optimal location for a single wired location in each standard office

    • OIT:  consult with parties involved in renovations and new construction to run cabling to special-purpose locations based on the needs in those spaces

    • Faculty and staff:  arrange furniture in a standard office to use the single standard jack provided

    • Deans and Vice Presidents:  consider whether exceptional requests to run additional connections are needed in a standard office in order to minimize the number of exceptions that are made; adhere to this standard where no critical need for more than one connection exists

    • New construction and renovated standard offices will have one location (with two jacks) installed per standard office.

    • If an existing standard office already has one or more locations, no moves or additions will be performed as a standard service.

    • Users will be instructed to use a patch cable to connect to the single location unless doing so exceeds the maximum cable length allowed to adhere to the existing Category 6 structured cabling standard (100 meters to the wiring closet patch panel) or creates a significant occupational (e.g. tripping) hazard.   In such a case, if the furniture configuration or use can be changed to avoid this consequence, the office occupant should make that change so that the one-connection standard can be maintained.

    • Additional locations in offices will be charged on a time and material basis with a minimum charge of $500.00, and with Dean/Vice President approval.
