Windows 8 FAQ for Faculty and Staff   - Updated 8/6/2013

Current OIT Recommendations

Many of the compatibility issues which prevented ISU from adapting Windows 8 have been resolved.

OIT does support Windows 8 for faculty and staff in an as-needed capacity but it is still not recommended that you take steps to upgrade unless you have a specific need such as software written for a touch-screen device.

OIT has determined that a formal move to Windows 8 is not necessary or wise at this time given certain compatibility issues and a not insignificant learning curve to use the new interface.  Windows 7 is a stable, fast, and efficient operating system and best suited to the university’s current needs overall.  We will evaluate Windows 10 for possible campus-wide deployment as that software becomes available for testing.

If you have any questions or technical issues please contact the Technology Support Center at 812-237-2910 #4. Your question will be directed to the appropriate staff.

General Windows 8 Information

Windows 8 is Microsoft's latest operating system. Windows 8 represents a dramatic change from the traditional Windows experience, and shipped on October 26th, 2012. Microsoft introduced a different user interface, originally codenamed "Metro," that is similar to the interface on Windows phones. Windows 8 is available in four versions:

  • Windows 8
  • Windows 8 Professional
  • Windows 8 Enterprise
  • Windows RT

The versions are differentiated by the features they provide. Windows RT and "Windows 8" are marketed to the home user, whereas Windows 8 Professional and Enterprise are marketed to the business user. Windows RT mobile devices run on the ARM processing platform and are not compatible with most existing Windows software. Due to security concerns and incompatibility with our campus computing infrastructure OIT will not be supporting Windows 8 for the time being. The OIT Technology Support Center will attempt to help with Windows 8 related issues.

System requirements

The minimum computer hardware requirements for running Windows 8, as recommended by Microsoft, are:

  • 1 GHz or faster processor
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 20 GB available disk space
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
  • Metro style applications requires a minimum screen resolution of 1024x768 and 1366x768 for the snap feature
  • TPM 1.2 or later is requires for BitLocker support for use in the Stanford Whole Disk Encryption (SWDE) service

There may be additional requirements to use certain features. See Microsoft's Windows 8 System Requirements page for the official list of system requirements.

Windows 8 Professional and Enterprise have very similar minimum hardware requirements to those of Windows Vista and Windows 7. While Windows Vista and Windows 7 certified computers should run Windows 8 Professional or Enterprise, we encourage you to run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant to confirm the computer meets the requirements. This utility analyzes your system and identifies possible compatibility problems with your hardware and software.

Note: You can do an in-place upgrade to Windows 8 Professional from all version of Windows 7 except Windows 7 Enterprise. You can do an in-place upgrade to Windows 8 Enterprise from Windows 7 Professional or Enterprise.
