Symphonic Band and Concert Band to perform Nov. 15

November 8, 2011

The Indiana State University School of Music Symphonic Band and Concert Band will perform a concert featuring the music of four diverse composers Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Tilson Auditorium.

Doug Keiser, assistant director of bands and conductor of both the symphonic and concert band explains that this concert is in "Commemoration and Celebration" of 2011 being "the 100th anniversary of the death of Gustav Mahler, the 75th anniversary of the death of Indiana march composer Fred Jewell, the 50th anniversary of Percy Grainger's death, and the 50th birthday of American composer Julie Giroux."

Each of the four composers will be commemorated during the concert as the Symphonic and Concert Band presents works of the four composers. The Symphonic Band will pay tribute to Mahler by performing a transcription of the finale of his "Symphony No. 3." Both ensembles will close their individual performances with a march by Jewell.

Grainger's work will be represented by the performance of his "Children's March," "Sussex Mummer's Christmas Carol," "Percy Grainger Suite" (that is an arrangement of the three songs "Country Gardens," "Irish Tune from County Derry," and "Molly on the Shore") performed by the concert band and "Australian Up Country Tune" performed by the symphonic band.

Lastly, the Giroux's birthday will be celebrated with the performance of the piece entitled, "Three Fanfares" by the Symphonic Band.

Keiser will be joined on the podium by graduate music education students Sutton Doty and Nathan Pollard conducting the concert band.
Admission to the event is free and attendance by campus and community members is encouraged. For more information, contact the School of Music at 812-237-2771.
