Kellogg's and Indiana State team up to fight hunger

In a collaborative effort to help fight hunger, Kellogg's® Food Away From Home and Indiana State University Dining Services are teaming up to donate cereal to a local food bank.

A bowl of Kellogg's® cereal will be donated to the Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank for every bowl of Kellogg's® cereal enjoyed by students on campus through Dec. 9. An estimated 6,400 servings of cereal are expected to be donated.

According to Sue Sluyter, dining services general manager for Sodexo at Indiana State, cereal is a popular choice of students dining in ISU dining halls.

"This is an easy way for students to make a difference while enjoying one of their favorite foods," she said.

Last year, Terre Haute Catholic Charities Food Bank distributed more than 2.6 million pounds of food to hungry individuals in seven Indiana counties. Through its partnership with more than 80 nonprofit agencies in Clay, Greene, Knox, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo counties, the food bank provides food to more than 32,000 individuals in need.

"This effort by Kellogg's and Indiana State helps those in need and provides students with an opportunity to help support this important cause," Sluyter said. "I am delighted that we can team up with a Fortune 500 company and industry leader to fight hunger in the Wabash Valley."

Tim Knowlton, vice president, corporate social responsibility for Kellogg Company said Kellogg has supported food banks across the U.S. for nearly 30 years, donating an average of $20 million in products annually.

"Our partnership with Indiana State University Dining Services and Catholic Charities is an example of our continued commitment to helping those challenged in these economic times," Knowlton said.

The cereal program is just one way Indiana State helps fight hunger in the Wabash Valley. Catholic Charities also receives surplus food items on a daily basis from the university's dining facilities. Those donations added up to more than 15,000 pounds in 2010, according to Ray Veit, director of dining Halls for Sodexo at Indiana State.
