Update, Jan. 31, 2011: This event has been postponed to Feb. 22 and will take place in Holmstedt Hall, Room 103.
Wright State University President David Hopkins will speak at Indiana State University February 1 as part of the roll out of "Unbounded Possibilities," a new initiative that expands upon the Programs of Distinction initiative that began in 2007.
Hopkins will meet with administrative and faculty groups on how regional state universities can be especially effective at building distinction by transcending their traditional internal silos and collaborating in addressing important societal needs.
His visit will culminate in a keynote presentation to the campus community at 4 p.m. in Hulman Memorial Student Union, Dede III. Hopkins is a former administrator and faculty member at Indiana State and a reception honoring him for his years of service to ISU will immediately follow.
Hopkins' visit represents the start of a two-month period of campus engagement "on the opportunities of new internal and external collaborations to help seize our future in ways that have proven successful at other institutions," said Josh Powers, special assistant to the provost for academic initiatives at Indiana State.
Powers listed Wright State and its Centers of Excellence, the University of Southern California and its advancement of interdisciplinary programs, Arizona State University and its ASU Challenges initiative, and the University of California-Berkeley and its Big Ideas program as examples.
Unbounded Possibilities, the product of a faculty and staff committee charged with developing a means of advancing institutional distinction at ISU, seeks to build on the successes of the previous distinctive programs initiative. The new initiative will focus on how the array of quality programs, faculty, and staff can work in greater partnership to serve the broader society.
Faculty and staff have been invited to submit concept papers by March 31. Submitted concepts will be evaluated via a transparent internal process, with a limited number selected for development as full proposals for further review in mid-September. The university has allocated $5 million to support the initiative over a 5-year period for which the opportunity of base funding is possible.
