Of 77 schools in the nation, Indiana State University's flight team placed 12th overall in the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's SAFECON competition.
This was the first time ISU had competed in-or hosted-the national competition.
"I thought, all things considered, our people did really well for the first time," said Vern Bothwell, ISU aviation technology instructor. "They worked hard, and they came out of it very, very well."
The National Intercollegiate Flying Association is a professional organization that works to enhance and improve aviation education in the United States by promoting intercollegiate flight competitions and bringing together aviation students and industry professionals.
During the competition at Terre Haute International Airport Hulman Field, flight teams from across the nation demonstrated their landing, flight, navigation and simulation skills. Schools and individuals earned awards for their safety, flight and coaching abilities.
The ISU team was led by student captains Jessica Campbell, a senior from Grandview, and Jeff Gardner, a junior from Fishers. Campbell placed third for top scoring females, missing second place by 1.5 points. Gardner placed second in the men's achievement category.
Campbell competed in the simulated comprehensive aircraft navigation event, placing 11th overall. Christopher Allen, an ISU senior from Annandale, Va., placed 11th in the power-off accurately landings event.
Seniors Patrick Doyle of Batesville was drop master and Josh Heisler of Newburgh was pilot in the message drop competition and the pair placed 11th in the event. Ben Forth, an ISU senior from Indianapolis, and Campbell were ranked sixth for crew resource management and line oriented flight training.
In order to compete in the national competition, flight teams had to have placed first or second in regional competitions. The hosting school was also eligible to compete.
With many of the ISU competitors returning, Bothwell believes the team has a bright future.
"We can only get better," he said.
