Business students to fight inflation with inflation during Saturday event

November 30, 2009

Indiana State University's MBA Association will work this week to educate Wabash Valley drivers about how they can stay safe while traveling on the roadways this winter.

Students will be on hand Saturday at Baesler's Market, located at 2900 Poplar St. in Terre Haute, to help drivers assess whether their vehicles' tires are inflated to correct levels.

Jasmine Singh, president of the MBA Association at Indiana State, said as the members of her organization work to "fight inflation with inflation" they have several goals in mind.

"We obviously want to educate people about the importance of accurately inflating their tires," she said. "If you keep your tires inflated correctly, you can increase the miles per gallon you get from your car. And that's a great way to save money."

But in addition to educating the public and benefiting from the networking opportunities of interacting with Wabash Valley residents, Singh said a third goal of the group is to increase its visibility on and off the ISU campus.

"Ultimately, we hope this effort will get more ISU students interested in joining the MBA Association," Singh said.

The MBA Association is a graduate student organization that sponsors professional, social and recreational events to promote increased student involvement and inspire a sense of community.

Jeff Harper, director of the MBA program at ISU and interim associate dean for the Scott College of Business, said the event will help to promote social and economic responsibility.

"There certainly is a business connection to this," he said. "This encourages students to be actively involved with the community ... and to do something that can make a difference."

It's something that Singh hopes will make a difference for all who are involved.

"We will be the ones in the parking lot Saturday wearing the neon green vests," she said. "This is a community service project, so we don't need money from anyone. We'll just be there to help."

The event is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday in the west side parking lot in front of the store.
