Team Sycamore Racing participating at exhibition at State Museum

January 20, 2009

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Catch Indiana State University's Team Sycamore Racing at the Gathering Before the Green Flag exhibition Jan. 24 and 25 at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis.

Gathering Before the Green Flag invites fans to sit behind the wheel of a variety of racing vehicles, from Indy cars to go-karts and dragsters, and to see other racing vehicles such as motorcycles, vintage race cars and the "Miss Madison" unlimited hydroplane. Racing insiders, such as Scott Goodyear, Bob Jenkins, Donald Davidson and professional race photographer Ron McQueeney, will participate in question and answer sessions.

The IMAX Theater will show two racing movies -- Super Speedway, a documentary that follows the Newman-Haas racing team as it builds, tests and races and NASCAR 3D, which straps you into the driver's seat with Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and other NASCAR greats.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for all racing fans," said Randy Peters, motorsports coordinator for Indiana State's College of Technology and advisor to Team Sycamore Racing. "Gathering Before the Green Flag gives race fans a chance to learn more about what Indiana State is doing in the field of motorsports. It also gives our students a chance to network with people active in the industry."

Team Sycamore Racing is preparing for its second season. In its rookie season, the team finished 18th out of 163 teams in NHRA Division 3 Super Comp and raced in two national events. The students brought home two Wally awards, one for best appearing crew and the other for best engineered car from the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio. According to the NHRA, the last time both awards were given to the same team was at the race in Phoenix, 1992.

Students are active in all areas of the team management and business aspects, including engineering components, acquiring sponsorships, marketing, creating graphics, event planning, and driving. Indiana State's motorsports management minor, as well as membership in Team Sycamore Racing, is open to all students, regardless of major.
