The center will be honored during an awards ceremony Nov. 2 at the Statehouse in Indianapolis, recognizing its promotion of EconomicsAmerica and other statewide programs in the ISU region.
Over the past year, the ISU center, directed by John Conant, professor of economics, planned and executed 13 workshops that reached more than 220 teachers in the Terre Haute region and provided pre-service teacher training for undergraduate students. The center also assisted seven schools in obtaining Indiana Department of Education economics grants, the highest number of any of the state's 13 regional centers.
“The fact that so many area teachers come to the workshops offered by ISU’s Center for Economic Education is a testament to the dedication of these teachers,†said Conant. “It is a joy to show them grade appropriate curricular materials that they can use in their classrooms to not only meet the Indiana Academic Standards, but to help start their students on the road to economic and financial literacy.â€Â
This award is in honor of Peter V. Harrington, who served as executive director of the Indiana Council for Economic Education from 1971-1997. Harrington's commitment and leadership built the Indiana Council into one of the strongest Councils for Economic Education in the country.
Results from the 2006 National Assessment of Educational Progress test indicate 42 percent of U.S. high school seniors were considered “proficient†in economics.
During the Nov. 2 awards program, Conant will receive a plaque and a check for $3,500 to use for the advancement of economic education in the Terre Haute region. The award is sponsored financially by Duke Realty Corp.
The Indiana Council for Economic Education has provided resources and training to the teachers and students of Indiana, as well as a comprehensive partnership of leaders from business, labor, agriculture, education, and government dedicated to improving economic literacy in Indiana.
