Author and poet Amy Fleury will be the featured speaker at "A Writer's Salon" at 4 p.m. on Oct. 18 in the first-floor Browsing Area of Indiana State University's Cunningham Memorial Library.
A recipient of the Nadya Aisenberg Fellowship from the MacDowell Colony and a Kansas Arts Commission fellowship in poetry, Fleury's book, "Beautiful Trouble," won the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award and was published by Southern Illinois University Press in 2004.
This event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the ISU Creative Writing Program of the Department of English, and Cunningham Memorial Library. Refreshments will be served.
Jane Austen expert to speak on the elusive female reader
Jan Fergus, professor of English at Lehigh University, will present, "The Elusive Female Reader and the Market in Eighteenth-Century Provincial England," at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 19 in Indiana State University's Root Hall, Room A-264. Her presentation is part of the Joseph S. Schick Lecture Series of ISU's Department of English.
Fergus also will present "Fiction in the Archives: Desultory Reading Practices and Secret Novel Reading," at 10 a.m. on Oct. 20 in Root Hall, Room A-264, as part of "Always on Friday."
Fergus, who earned her Ph.D. at City University of New York, and her B.A. at Stanford University, is the author of "Jane Austen: A Literary Life" (1991) and "Jane Austen and the Didactic Novel" (1985). Fergus is the editor of "Austen's Lesley Castle" and "A History of England." She is also the author of numerous articles on Austen and other eighteenth-century women writers.
In December 2006, Oxford University Press will publish her "Provincial Readers in Eighteenth-century England."
Her appearance at ISU is funded by an endowed gift to the Department of English from Joseph Schick, who taught in the department from 1946 to 1976. He died in 1987, and the Lecture Series was initiated the following year.
