The gift to the department of social work in ISU's College of Arts and Sciences will be matched 125% by the Lilly Endowment, resulting in a total of $90,000.
The gift will go toward three conferences, two of which are already established - a mental health conference for social workers and a multi-disciplinary mental health conference with the ISU psychology department. New this year as a result of Hamilton Center?s latest gift is a management and social services conference.
In the past, conferences have been held on the ISU campus in Terre Haute. It is hoped that the management and social services conference location will be in Terre Haute for the first year and then relocate to Indianapolis.
"Having the conference in Indianapolis will draw a much larger audience as well as strengthen the partnership between Indiana State University and the Hamilton Center," said Galen Goode, Hamilton Center's chief executive officer.
"Hamilton Center has been a leader in the state of Indiana. The grant allows Indiana State University to continue its direct collaboration with them, and to continue to be innovative and show a commitment to the community," said Robyn Lugar, interim chair of the department of social work.
The conferences this year will utilize several events and programs on campus, including women's studies classes in "Take Back the Night" and the theater department conducting two plays. Each will have violence prevention as the key message.
Thanks to the gift's value, Lugar hopes to schedule new, quality speakers for the events who were not available in the past. It is also a good way to focus on more community and student engagement, she said.
Hamilton Center is a regional behavioral health system with offices in 10 central and west-central Indiana counties: Clay, Greene, Hendricks, Marion, Owen, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo. The center is based in Terre Haute and has more than 600 employees statewide, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, therapists, counselors and case managers.
