TERRE HAUTE - Indiana State University will host its annual Renaissance Fair to celebrate William Shakespeare's birthday and to promote its English Department on Friday, April 28.
The fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn between Root and Holmstedt halls on the ISU campus.
The Renaissance Fair will feature music and food from Shakespeare's era; scenes from Shakespeare's works, portrayed by the ISU theater department; and a poetry slam. T-shirts for the English Department also will be sold.
The poetry slam, in which prizes are given to first- through third-place winners, usually attracts the most attention, said Hannah Burris, junior English major and president of the Student Advisory Committee.
"The Renaissance Fair is important because it spreads the word about the English Department, as well as a great literary era," Burris said. "It also provides a great way for students to relax and have some fun before finals week."
The Renaissance Fair began several years ago as a private party for Student Advisory Committee members, Burris said. The members then decided to open up the event for the entire student body. It has grown every year since then.
The English Department's Student Advisory Committee has been holding weekly meetings all semester to plan this event, and has received help from volunteers in the theater and music departments at Indiana State.
For history buffs, Shakespeare's precise birthdate is not known. He was baptized on April 26, 1564; and over time, April 23 has become the accepted date of birth, in part because he also died on April 23 in 1616.
