Each day hundreds of ISU students go in and out of the Cunningham Memorial Library, but Thursday (Sept. 4), the hundreds of students turned into thousands.
The sixth annual Library Extravaganza kicked off with music from the band, Southland, which is comprised of ISU staff and friends. The Extravaganza is an event which promotes the library and the resources available to students along with demonstrations and other attractions.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the first floor of the library was full of informational tables controlled by different groups from all around campus.
"This event is meant to welcome back students, staff, and faculty, as well as to show our appreciation," said Alberta Comer, interim dean of the library.
More than 5,000 students attended the event. For the first time this year free pizza was served along with soft drinks and popcorn. Along with free eats, the library unveiled new CDs and DVDs, which became available after 3 p.m.
Keith Rodgers, a freshman business major expressed his excitement for the event.
"I saw the band when I was walking by and decided to come in and take a look, it's pretty cool," said Rodgers. "This is the longest time I've spent in the library so far; I got a chance to figure out how to use the database system."
Aside from informational tables and demonstrations, there were multiple chances to win prizes such as gift cards to Wal-mart, the ISU bookstore and other places around Terre Haute.
"I come to the library at least once a day and today is the first time I've got free pizza," said Hannah Burns, a senior elementary education major. "I think this is a great way for underclassmen to get to know the library and the technology that is available to them."
