In addition to the traditional book and touch ceremony, a past Distinguished Alumni Award winner will speak about his alma mater and provide entertainment.
Alan Barcus, who earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana State, has spent most of his professional career as a composer, lyricist, arranger, songwriter, playwright, and pianist. He has written songs for various recording artists, including Richard Marx, The Fifth Dimention, Roberta Flack and Peggy Lee. His song, "You're My Cubs," is the official fight song of the Chicago Cubs and has been playing at Wrigley Field during Cub games for a number of years.
He has scored 12 movies, as well as providing the music for some 2,400 television and radio commercials, including campaigns for McDonalds, United Airlines, Kelloggs, Dial soap, Holiday Inn, State Farm insurance, Pepsi, Citibank, Tresemme Shampoo, Farm Bureau, and countless others. Among the best-known of his commercials is the long-running "rattle rattle, thunder clatter, boom, boom, boom" ad for Car-X, which features him as the singer.
Barcus, a Hall of Fame runner at Indiana State, is currently a member of the Chicago Masters basketball team, which won the national championship in 2001, 2002, and 2004. He has competed in International Games as a member of the gold-medal Team USA in Helsinki in 1998 and again in 2006 in Hamburg, Germany. He was inducted into the ISU athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.
