“I feel very fortunate to have attracted someone of Salatha's experience, skills, and vision to help take our new student programs to the next level. He is very outgoing and is making it a point this week to begin meeting people across the campus,†said John Beacon, vice president for enrollment management, marketing and communications.
Willis’ responsibilities include summer orientation, fall welcome events and first-year programs at ISU.
Prior to joining ISU’s administrative staff, he served in a similar capacity at Western Michigan University as coordinator of orientation in conjunction with fall welcome and the first-year seminar on top of his duties as an assistant director of admissions since 2006.
“ISU has a long and successful history of student success programs. Our focus now must be to continue building on this rich history through collaboration, open-ended communication, and a students-first approach,†said Willis.
From 2001 to 2006, Willis served as the director of one of Western Michigan’s residence halls. Earlier he served WMU as a graduate assistant hall director, an instructor in web page design and as an administrative assistant to the associate vice president for student affairs.
While at WMU, he has served on the Presidential Diversity Council and as a co-founder of the WMU Emerging Executive Mentoring Pilot Program and the Black Congratulatory Council and as the founder of the Young Black Males Support Network. Professionally, he is affiliated with the National Orientation Directors Association, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Michigan College Student Personnel Association. He also is a member of the Omega Psi Phi community service fraternity.
Willis received a bachelor’s of business administration and a master’s in educational leadership, both from Western Michigan. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership.
Willis’ appointment will be formally approved by the ISU Board of Trustees in February.
