Masterworks, a 120 - voice symphonic chorus comprised of students, faculty, and community singers, studies and performs with the ISU Symphony Orchestra and professional soloists each semester.
“The Seasons,†Haydn’s last major work, premiered in April of 1801, in Vienna. At the time, Haydn was at the peak of his musical fame. Mozart had been dead for a decade and Beethoven had yet to fully establish himself as a prominent composer.
In collaboration with Baron Gottfried Van Swieten, with whom he worked to compose “The Creation,†Haydn began the musical setting of the James Thomson poem in the fall of 1799. The initial response from the public indicated immediate success, but the piece soon fell from prominence likely due to its secular subject matter.
“I am doing something a bit out of the ordinary by programming this work at this particular time,†said Buchanan.
“In 2009, the musical world will be dominated by performances of Haydn’s music, to mark the 200th anniversary of his death. In anticipation of those numerous performances, I chose to perform this work now,†he added.
Friday’s performance will feature ISU voice faculty members Colleen Davis, soprano; and tenor David Mannell and baritone Damien Geter as soloists.
“While the piece is very demanding, the chorus has enjoyed the rehearsal process and is eager to perform,†Buchanan said. “We have so much talent at ISU and this is a unique opportunity for the community to experience a piece of this magnitude.â€Â
Tickets for the concert are $8 for adults and $5 for students (K-12). ISU students will be admitted free of charge with a valid student ID. For more information, call the ISU choral music office at 237-4590.
