The program will feature the critically acclaimed ISU Concert Choir, under the direction of Scott Buchanan, director of choral activities. This is the opening concert of the year for the ensemble, which will end its season early next summer with an appearance at the Lucerne International Choral Festival in Switzerland. The ensemble will also perform in Lugano and Venice, Italy.
“This talented group of singers may very well be the finest ensemble I have ever conducted,†said Buchanan. “They have a wonderful, energetic spirit about them that really comes alive.â€Â
The Concert Choir will open the concert with “The Creation,†a rock cantata composed in the 1970s which features piano, electric guitar, bass and drums. The choir will close the concert by performing two early motets by Palestrina and Lotti, and several works by contemporary American composers, including Kirke Mechem, Greg Jasperse, Joshua Shank, Richard Nance, and Mack Wilberg.
“We are singing extremely diverse literature which requires them to change tone colors and make frequent adjustments in their performance personality,†Buchanan added. “It’s not easy to do, but they are willing to experiment and try new things each and every day. Making music with this group is a fun process.â€Â
The Women’s Chorale and Sycamore Singers, both under the direction of Mark Carlisle, will also be on the program. The Women’s Chorale will feature works by Audrey Snyder, Victor Johnson, Peter Williams, and Earlene Rentz. The Sycamore Singers will offer selections by William Byrd, Hans Leo Hassler, Dale Warland, Craig Carnahan, and Philip Stopford.
Admission is free and open to the public, though donations toward the Concert Choir’s European tour will be accepted. Additional information can be obtained by calling Wendy Cox at (812) 237-4590.
