Spanish instructor Connie Elmore shares teaching talents at local youth center (July 2009):

Thirty-five years ago I began my teaching career. My experience has taught me that a student-centered classroom is the best learning environment for both teachers and students. I strive to incorporate the four basic language skills--listening, speaking, reading, and writing--along with an exploration of the Hispanic culture and linkage to the other studies of the students.

I try to consistently keep in mind that I am the one who must adjust to each individual in the group. I openly encourage students to make mistakes, to take those risks which are necessary in learning any language and which contribute to the development of critical thinking.

It is a pleasure to work in a Department where professors work very hard to make sure that, through their innovative ideas and special projects, we all keep in mind that the student is ever to be the center of our teaching.
